I was asked to write about Mirabeau B. Lamer. I am going to write about how he became so important in the Texas Revolution and a little bit about his family history. Mirabeau Bonaparte Lamar was born in Louisville, Georgia and grew up in Fairfield, as his fathers plantation. When he was young he was good at oil painting, horse riding, fencer and writer. He worked as a merchant and ran a news paper but didn’t do well. On January 1st 1826, he married Iabitha Jordan in Georgia. He was also elected state senaitor in 1829. On August 20th 1830 Mirabeau’s wife died. He was so sad he left Georgia to travel. By 1835 he traveled with some people to Texas. He felt happy and healthy so he decided to stay in Texas. He declared for independents and helped build a fort at Velasco. When he herd about the Alamo he joined the Revolutionary army as a private. In the spring of 1836 at the battle of the Alamo of San Jacinto he was very brave and made the rescue of two surrounded Texans. The Mexican army saluted him for his courage. Ten days after the battle he became secretary of war and wanted Santa Anna to be executed. During the first national election in September 1836, he became the first vice president to Sam Houston. By December 5th 1837 his campaign for Texas president had begun. His inauguration as second president of the new republic of Texas was on December 10th 1838. His presidency had a lot of problems: only the United States recognized Texas independence, Mexico threatened re conquest, the Indians were causing problems and there was no money. Some good things came from his presidency like he moved the new capital city to Austin. He has also been called “the Father of Texas Education” because he set aside three leagues of land in each country for schools and 50 leagues of land for two universities which became Texas a and m university and the university of Texas. When he wasn’t re-elected he returned to Richmond. He worked in the United States Senate and later fought in the Mexican war. In New Orleans, in February he married Henrietta Maffitt and had a daughter. In 1875, he became the United States minister to Nicaragua and Costa Rica. He did this for 20 months. After two months coming home he died because of a heart attack at his Richmond plantation on December 19, 1879. I think Mirabeau B. Lamar was a famous person in the eighteen hundreds. I’m glad I’ve been able to write a little bit about his family history and his contribution to Texas History.
